Arogyam (Health) is the basis for all the four purushaarthas (dharma, artha, kaama and moksha). Illness steals this, prosperity and even life itself

swasta, healthy state

“samadosha samaagnischa 
samadhaatu malakriya
prasannaatmaendriyamanaha 
swasta ityabhidheeyate”
Healthy state is when:
Doshas, Agnis and Dhaatus are in equilibrium
All malakriyas (excretory functions) are proper
Soul, Indriyas (both karmendriyas and jnanendriyas) and mind are calm and in pleasant state
That is, healthy state of a jeevan is more than absence of illness ; rather, it is a well maintained dynamic equilibrium

dhaatu

“rasaƒsrikmaamsamedOƒsti-
mmajjaasuklaani dhaatavah”

Seven types of dhaatu are:

  1. rasa
  2. rakta
  3. maamsa
  4. medas
  5. asti
  6. majja
  7. sukla

 

Agni

nayate parinamayateeti

That which brings out changes in organism or substance is defined as Agni

It can be categorized into
1. Jadaraagni or Koshtaagni
2. Bhootaagni
3. Dhatvagni

Types of Dravya

“samanam kopanam svastha-
hitam dravyamiti tridhaa”

Dravyas are of three kinds. One type is for Samanam. That is, to reduce Doshas. Another type is for Kopanam. That is, to increase  Doshas. Third type is for Svasthahitam. That is, for maintaining good health.

Dravyam

“yatraasritaa karmagunaah
kaaranam samavaayi yat tat dravyam”

Substance (including drugs) in which actions and properties are located in is Dravya. Causation of its effect is natural and inherent in the substance..

Shat Rasaas (Six Tastes)

“svaaduramloƒtha lavanah
katukastikta eva ca
kaashaayasceti shatkoyam
rasaanaam samgrahah smritah”

Six rasas or tastes are:
1. Svaad (Sweet)
2. Amla (Sour)
3. Lavana (Salty)
4. Katuka (Bitter)
5. Tikta (Pungent)
8. Kashaaya (Astringent)
